SAME-SEX NONSENSE

I call it Ghana’s burning issue. Recently Homosexuality – more fashionably called Same-Sex Relationships – has become a tough issue in this country with most people talking against this same-sex thing. I’ll take the liberty to say that I’m violently anti-gay or anti-lesbian not because I’m ready to harass the practitioners but violent because I detest the practice.

I read a report of Ms Anna Bossman’s interview on MultiTV on myjoyonline.com in which she asked pastors to avoid double standards when talking about same-sex relationships. Her main argument was that there were issues such as child sexual abuse and violence against women, and these are the issues the pastors should concentrate on not bashing homosexuals.

I begin to wonder why the loud and outspoken minority of persons such as Nana Oye Lithur, Ms Anna Bossman, and recently Professor Fred Sai are trying to cow the rest of the state into accepting same-sex relationships on the flimsy basis of Human Rights. Are not these people a group of “Learned” persons who should know right and see that our cultural and religious context as a country don’t allow for same-sex relationships? Even animals don’t do same-sex, so why should we humans – higher animals – get involved?

Following from Ms Anna Bossman’s argument, if we should not bash same-sex relationships  because we don’t talk and act against rape (a very fallacious statement) or because rape exists, then we should allow armed robbery because we don’t talk and act against petty thievery or because it exists. Doesn’t the outgoing acting commissioner of CHRAJ know there are laws against rape and violence? Why isn’t she pushing for a law against same-sex relationships? Are we to allow the creation of puddles of water because the sea, lakes and rivers exist? Or should we allow lions and wolves into our homes because we’ve domesticated cats and dogs?

Let us pray for the church and Ghana so that our attempts to modernize will not bring us hollow intellectuals like those proponents of same-sex relationships, or lead to the further erosion of the moral fabric of our society.
